Toxoptera typhae Laing, 1923, hintherto regarded as a synonym of Paraschizaphis scirpi (Passerini, 1874) is a distinct species. The general colour of this Typha inhabiting aphid is broncy-brown, the apical segment of the rostrum is at most as long as the second joint of hind tarsi, and the male are alate. In scirpi sensu stricto which at Rostock accurs on Carex pseudocyperus L., however, the prevailling colour is very dark green so that the aphids are looking black, the ultimate rostral segment is somewhat longer than the second joint of hind tarsi, and the male are apterous. Paraschizaphis scirpi eriophori sspec. nov. apparently lives monophagously on Eriophorum angustifolium Honck. and therefore differs from the above scirpi Passerini by the host plant. The number of the occiput hair amounts 6-8 in the new subspecies versus 4-5 in 4-5 scirpi sensu stricto.
