Abstract

Measurements of the length and breadth of the head capsule and the length of the body of larvae of the corn ground-beetle (Zabrus tenebrioides Goeze) brought the following results: The much discussed fourth larval stage was not found in the larvae under examination. The breadths of the head capsule are distributed among the different stages as follows: L1: 1,09 to 1,29 mm; L2: 1,57 to 2,0 mm; L3: 2,57 to 3,14 mm. The data for the lengths of the head capsule are: L1: 0,57 to 0,74 mm; L2: 0,77 to 1,06 mm; L3: 1,40 bis 1,66 mm. Apart from the laborious measurements of the head capsule, simple determinations of the length of the larvae also allow a delimitation of the different larval stages sufficient for practical requirements The following classification is suggested: L1:< 11,5 mm; L2: 11,6 to 21,0 mm; L3:> 21,0 mm.
