Abstract

Apion seniculus Kirby, 1808, is a complex of three species. Having controlled 25 described taxa of this group the names of the two separated species have to be A. meieri Desbrochers, 1901, and Apion koestlini nov. spec. The most common species is A. seniculus with a westpalaearctic distribution, living oligophagous on Trifolium pratense L., T. medium L., T. fragiferum L. and T. trichopterum Panc. Possibly it still is a complex of different taxa because of the great variability of several morphological characters. The more rare A. meieri is probably distributed in all European countries, living in cool localities monophagous on Trifolium hybridum L., A. koestlini nov. spec. is only occurring in Central Europe (GDR, FRG, Poland), living oligophagous on Ononis species.
