Abstract

The larvae of 3 Central European Abax Bonelli species (A. parallelus (Duftschmid), A. ovalis (Duftschmid) in all larval instars, A. carinatus (Duftschmid) in first instar) are descibed and illustrated for the first time and the characters of larval morphology of the genus inclusive that of A. parallelepipedus (Piller et Mitterpacher), are pointed out. Furthermore the position of genus Abax inthrough the tribe Pterostichini is discussed. The larvae of Abax support the membership of this genus to the tribe Pterostichini. However, a lot of characters seperate Apax larvae from those of genus Pterostichus Bonelli, as there are: I. antennomere divided, seta MN on mandible absent, special chaetotaxy of adnasale, urogomphi articulate and sickle-shaped mandible. Abax larvae show some communities with larvae of Percus Bonelli, Molops Bonelli and Cyclotrachelus Chaudoir.
