Experiments for estimating activity density of epigeal arthropods (Araneae; Carabidae; Staphylinidae) in winter wheat fields were carried out by pitfall trapping form 1986 to 1989 near Halle/Saale. Proportions of polyphagous predators, their activity density during the vegetation period and their dominance structure should be examined. Most interesting group were the ground beetles. During the investigations 5 to 7 species were eudominant and dominant. The ground beetle Poecilus cupreus (L.) renders in all years as eudominant species and has had without the year 1988 an activity dominance above 30 per cent. Investigations for population density were carried out in 1987 and 1988. Square-meter-method (removal trapping), capture-recapture-method and wet extraction were used. The square-meter-method delivers good results. The use of the methods should be choiced to their aim.
