Abstract

The present paper evaluates the material on the butterfly family Noctuidae collected in the expedition to Albania by Deutsches Entomologisches Institut in 1961. It consists of 231 specimens of 85 species. 20 species were new in Albania and one species (Earias syriacana Bartel) new even in Europe. This brings the number of Noctuidae known from Albania to 240 species. - The distribution of these species in the countries adjacent to Albania is examined and they are assigned to the different types of distribution. With a share of nearly 43 per cent each, the species with Eurasian and Mediterranean distribution at present determine the character of the Noctuidae population of Albania. - A comparison with the fauna of some neighbouring countries leads to the conclusion that no more than half of the Noctuidae species of Albania are known at present. It is estimated that about 500 species are to be found in that country.
