Abstract

The larval development of the small and generalised Nannothemis bella and of the big and specialised Pantala flavescens is compared; the number of larval instars (10-12) is the same; Nannothemis bella takes 647-1037 days to reach maturity, the development is slow, interupted by diapauses, the duration of the instars differs greatly, the rates of growth are proportional. The development of Pantela flavescens takes 55-101 days until maturity, the development is rapid without diapauses; the duration of the instars does not differ greatly, the growth rate increases and the higest rate occurs in the 6th and last instar. The peculiarities of distributuin of the two species may be related to their development.
