The hypopharynx of the insects is derived only from the maxillary sternite, consequently the lack of segmentation is a primary phenomenon. The suspensoria correspond to the apodemes of the manibular sternite, and the dilatator muscles correspond to the sternal longitudinal dilatators. The retractors of the hypopharynx are of dorsoventral origin. The hemipteroid hypopharynx is homologous to the hypopharynx and the suspensoria of an orthopteroid oral apparatus. The hypopharynx wings can be regarded as homologues of the salivary pump. The wall of the salivary pump is formed by the lower plate of the hypopharynx, but labial elements can be found in it in front of the pores of the salivary ducts. The hemipteroid suspensory plate is also labial in ist origin; it is separated from the first segment of the proboscis by the secondary joint.
