Abstract

Anatomy and histology of the secretory glands of the head and of the labial gland opening at the head of Formica pratinsis Retzius, 1783, are described, including the characteristics of the annual cycle and of the age. On the basis of these findings a possible function of these glands is suggested. The current conceptions of their functions are discussed.
